Smoky Mountains Cabin

The Smoky Mountains Cabin is the most private of the four ridge top cabins at Engadine. It sits at the edge of the cluster, set back from the others, with the kind of separation that genuinely feels like you are alone on the property even on a fully booked weekend. The cabin looks west across the ridge toward layered mountain views that, on the right evening, give you the haze the Smoky Mountains are named for.

Inside, a queen sized bed in the bedroom, a queen sleeper sofa and easy chairs in the living area, a small dining table for two, a fully equipped galley kitchen, and a fireplace operated seasonally from mid October through mid March. The bathroom features a tub shower combination and the same finishes used across the cabin cluster. Outside, you have a covered front porch with rocking chairs that catches the afternoon sun, a fire pit with Adirondack chairs, a charcoal grill, and a hammock strung between two trees behind the cabin.

This cabin is family and pet friendly, like all of the cabins on the property. It works particularly well for couples who specifically want the most private cabin in the cluster, for guests traveling with a dog who want a quiet spot for the dog to settle in, for small families who appreciate the separation from neighbors, and for anyone planning a longer Blue Ridge Mountains stay where the daily rhythm of the property matters less than the cabin itself. The cabin accommodates up to four guests.

The walk to the inn’s main lawn and dining room is about five minutes downhill, slightly longer on the way back up. Most Smoky Mountains guests treat the cabin as a base and explore the broader property and the Asheville area from here. A fresh breakfast, with eggs often sourced from our own chickens and quail, is available at the inn for an additional charge per person, which most guests use at least once during a multi night stay. Coffee maker, basic pantry essentials, and a small supply of breakfast items are in the cabin.

Because the cabin sits at the edge of the ridge, the wild part of the property is right behind you. A switchback road drops down to Hominy Creek and the old Biltmore railroad grade, an easy-to-moderate walk worth doing for the creek alone. Push past it, ford the creek, and the grade tips into a strenuous climb that ties into the Pisgah system and its hundreds of miles of connected trail. None of it leaves Engadine land or the public land next to it, so you are never crossing onto someone’s private property. This is the difference between sleeping near the mountains and sleeping in them. We tracked a single afternoon of the route on the blog and only saw a fraction of what connects out there.
