Mount Mitchell Cabin

The Mount Mitchell Cabin is the largest cabin at Engadine and the only one that genuinely accommodates a small group near Asheville. It sleeps up to six and is the cabin we point friend groups, multi generation families, and small wedding parties to when they specifically want one larger space rather than several smaller cabins. It is named for Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, which is visible from the cabin’s porch on a clear day.

Inside, the cabin is laid out for actual group use. A main bedroom with a queen sized bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds (or a king when configured that way), a queen sleeper sofa in the living area, a generous bathroom, a separate full kitchen with everything you need to cook a real meal rather than reheat takeout, and a dining table that seats four comfortably. The wood burning fireplace operates seasonally from mid October through mid March.

This cabin is family and pet friendly. The bookings we see most often are multi generation family stays, friend groups of four to six on a Blue Ridge Mountains weekend, parents and grown children gathering for a holiday, and small wedding parties that want one place to base out of during a wedding weekend on the property. The cabin accommodates up to six guests.

The covered porch is large and wraps part of the cabin, with mountain views toward Mount Mitchell on a clear day. Two rocking chairs and additional seating make it usable for the whole group at once. Outside the porch, you have a fire pit with Adirondack chairs, a charcoal grill, and a hammock. A fresh breakfast, with eggs often sourced from our own chickens and quail, is available at the inn for an additional charge per person, which is worth booking for at least one morning of a multi night family stay.

With a group under one roof, having the trailhead on site changes the trip. From the cabin a switchback road runs down to Hominy Creek and the old Biltmore railroad bed, a moderate stretch the whole party can do together. Anyone after a harder day can ford the creek and climb, strenuously, into the Pisgah network and its hundreds of miles of connected trail. The route never leaves Engadine or the public land next to it, so nobody is wandering onto private property. Splitting the group between an easy creek walk and a hard summit push, then meeting back at the cabin, is the kind of day a downtown hotel cannot give you. We tracked one afternoon of it here.
