The Howell Suite is the second of the two oversized rooms on the second floor of the inn, the companion to the Vineyard View Suite. It is named for the Howell family connection that runs through Engadine’s history. The room sits on the front of the house with a different angle of view from Vineyard View, taking in more of the front lawn and the approach drive lined with old hardwoods, which is a particularly beautiful aspect in fall.
Inside, a king sized bed, a real sitting area with a small loveseat and chair, a writing desk, a chest of drawers, and a full closet that can hold a multi night wardrobe without contortion. A fireplace, operated seasonally from mid October through mid March, anchors the sitting area. The en suite bath features a clawfoot tub with shower, original to the period, and a generous vanity with the slightly higher ceiling height that the front of the house enjoys. Returning guests often describe Howell as the warmest feeling room in the inn, partly because of the way the late afternoon light angles in through the front windows.
This is a strong choice for couples on an anniversary or honeymoon, for a milestone celebration where you want something a little quieter than a hotel ballroom feel, and for the night before or after a wedding on the property. We see Howell booked often by guests who have stayed in the inn before and want to try a different room. It also works well for a focused work stay if you need a desk, reliable WiFi, and a setting that does not feel like a hotel near Asheville.
The room sits down the hall from the second floor common sitting area, where coffee and tea are available 24 hours, which most Howell guests use at some point during their stay. A fresh breakfast, with eggs often sourced from our own chickens and quail, is included each morning.
