The Cherokee Cabin is the most upscale of Engadine’s six cabins and the cabin most consistently requested by guests who want a true log cabin feel without giving up the comfort level of a boutique inn. It is built from genuine wood logs rather than the wood paneled construction common in the area, which gives it a different smell, sound, and visual character from the moment you walk in. Returning guests describe it as the cabin that does not feel like a cabin rental.

Inside, a king sized bed in the bedroom, a queen sleeper sofa and leather lounge chair in the living area, a fireplace operated seasonally from mid October through mid March, a small dining table for two, and a fully equipped galley kitchen for the kind of stays where you actually want to cook rather than eat out for every meal. The private bathroom features a two person spa tub and a separate shower, which is a detail couples specifically ask for when booking. Outside the cabin you have a fire pit with Adirondack chairs, a charcoal grill, a hammock, and the mountain views the cabin is named for.

Cherokee is family friendly and pet friendly. It works equally well for couples on anniversaries, honeymoons, and babymoons, for families with kids who want a more comfortable cabin experience than a typical rental, for friend groups of up to four who want the most upscale option in our cabin cluster, and for guests planning a longer Blue Ridge Mountains stay where they want both cabin privacy and inn quality finishes. The cabin accommodates up to four guests.

The location on the property gives you both. Easy access to the inn’s main lawn and outdoor wedding spaces if you happen to be visiting during a wedding, and a quick walk to the other five cabins if you are traveling as part of a larger group that has booked multiple cabins. Most Cherokee guests use the inn’s main breakfast service in the dining room at least once during their stay. It can be added to your reservation when you book or arranged on arrival.

One thing a downtown Asheville hotel cannot offer: the trail starts at your door. From the cabins you can walk a switchback road down to Hominy Creek and the old Biltmore railroad bed, a moderate stretch that most guests handle comfortably. If you want more, cross the creek and the climb turns strenuous as it joins the Pisgah trail network, which runs for hundreds of miles into the mountains. The route stays on Engadine and adjoining public land the whole way, so there are no private property lines to worry about. We mapped one honest afternoon of it here, and barely scratched the surface.
