The Captain’s Suite sits on the second floor of the original 1885 house and is named for Captain John Hoyt, the Civil War veteran who built Engadine after the war and named it for the Engadine Valley in Switzerland, which the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains reminded him of. More than any other room in the inn, this is the suite that gives you a real sense of the house’s history. The architecture is unmistakably Victorian, but the room itself reads as lived in rather than museum like.
A king sized bed anchors the room. Across from it, an oversized sofa faces the fireplace, which is operated seasonally from mid October through mid March and makes the room feel like the right place to be at the end of a leaf season day or a cold winter evening near Asheville. Two full height armoires give you genuine closet space, which matters when you’ve actually packed for a multi night stay. The en suite bathroom is a quiet point of pride. A clawfoot tub with shower, original to the period, plus a fully enclosed separate water closet. A small detail, but one almost no other property near Asheville offers. It makes the room work for couples who appreciate a little extra privacy from each other on a romantic getaway.
This is also one of the easiest rooms to settle into if you want to spend time outside the room itself. It sits directly off the second floor common sitting area, where coffee and tea are available around the clock. Most guests find themselves spending a quiet hour out there at some point during their stay, talking with other couples or just reading.
Couples celebrating anniversaries, honeymoons, and milestone birthdays make up the majority of stays in this suite, but it works equally well for a quiet weekend away from the city or a few nights of focused work in a setting that does not feel like a hotel.
