Balsam Mountains Cabin

The Balsam Mountains Cabin is set toward the rear of the property, in the quieter pocket of the ridge top cabin cluster, with views toward the Balsam Mountain range to the southwest. It is the cabin most often booked by guests who specifically asked for less foot traffic, more separation from the main lawn, and the quietest of the four ridge top cabins. If your priority on this trip is rest rather than activity, this is the cabin we steer you toward.

Inside, you have the same comfortable park model layout as the other three ridge top cabins. A queen sized bed in the bedroom, a queen sleeper sofa in the living area, a fireplace operated seasonally from mid October through mid March, a small dining table for two, and a fully equipped galley kitchen. The bathroom is a tub and shower combination. Two small closets in the bedroom and entry storage that handle a multi night wardrobe without negotiation.

The Balsam cabin is family and pet friendly, and accommodates up to four guests. It works particularly well for couples on anniversaries, for small families who want the most peaceful cabin in the cluster, for guests traveling with a dog who want a quieter spot for the dog to settle in, and for anyone planning a longer Blue Ridge Mountains stay where the cabin itself is the point.

The covered porch is angled toward the Balsam ridge line. Two rocking chairs, a fire pit with Adirondack chairs in the open area behind the cabin, a charcoal grill, and a hammock complete the outdoor setup. A fresh breakfast, with eggs often sourced from our own chickens and quail, is available at the inn for an additional charge per person. Coffee maker, basic pantry essentials, and a small supply of breakfast items are in the cabin for guests who prefer to start the day in the cabin rather than walk to the inn.

If you do feel like moving, the trail is right here when you want it and easy to ignore when you don’t. A switchback road leads down to Hominy Creek and the old Biltmore railroad bed at a moderate, unhurried pace. Anyone wanting a real workout can cross the creek and take the strenuous climb up into the Pisgah system, which connects onward for hundreds of miles. None of it leaves Engadine property or the adjoining public land, so the whole walk is yours to take at your own speed.
